16 Days of Activism: Meeting on Obiliq Municipality against Domestic Violence

KCSS marked the first day of the “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” by hosting a meeting with women and representatives of public institutions at the municipality of Obiliq, as part of the “Women, Peace and Security” project. This meeting was organized jointly with the Office for Gender Equality of the Municipality of Obiliq. Participants included representatives from the Kosovo Police, Center for Social Work, safe-houses as well as representatives from municipal directorates, civil society and citizens from this municipality.

Several topics pertaining to domestic violence and gender-based violence were discussed during the meeting. Among other topics, participants touched upon the importance of reporting cases of violence to relevant authorities, protective mechanisms through which victims are protected as well as the important role that relevant institutions, such as the Police, Centers for Social Work and Safe-houses, play in treating and preventing this phenomenon.

The women participating in this meeting received detailed information with regards to the steps they can take should they or a closed one fall victim of domestic violence, including how and where they can report such cases, the type of help that Centers for Social Work provide for victims of domestic and gender-based violence and the services that are offered to them in safe-houses. According to the Officer for Gender Equality at the Municipality of Obiliq, this municipality has been among the first in Kosovo to finance safe-houses, adding that the municipality has also offered permanent shelter to three victims of severe cases of domestic violence.
