On the occasion of the European Data Protection Day, KCSS researcher, Sofije Kryeziu provided a presentation on citizen's awareness about these same rights in an event organized by the National Agency for the Protection of Personal Data. For this occasion, KCSS has launched the preliminary findings of the Kosovo Security Barometer - Special Edition of Kosovo Citizen's Perceptions for the Personal Data Protection. Her presentation was focused on public perceptions regarding the privacy and personal data protection. Special focus was given to the Kosovo citizen's awareness about the role of the National Agency for Personal Data Protection (NAPDP). Moreover, this special edition aims to show to what extent the public trusts in handling their personal data to some of the institutions that possess a large number of personal data such as Telephone Operators, Kosovo Police, Health Institutions as well as Banks.
Results of the Kosovo Security Barometer (KSB) show that slight increase in awareness among Kosovo citizens about their rights to privacy and protection of personal data, however, the knowledge is still lacking. Over 63% of respondents stated that they are not aware of their rights regarding privacy and protection of personal data, followed by the 13% who are aware to some extent and over 21% of them who are mainly aware of this topic.
In general, the results show that elderly citizens remain the most uninformed group of people about these rights, followed by middle-age citizens and the younger generations. In terms of perceptions of privacy and protection of personal data by gender, no major differences are noted. However, respondents in rural areas tend to be less informed about these areas than those in urban areas.
On the other hand, 67.2% of respondents stated that they are not aware of the existence of the National Agency for the Protection of Personal Data and 30.0% of the respondents stated that they are aware of the existence of this agency.
With regard to citizen's concerns about a possible misuse of their personal data by some of the institutions, it is noted that the biggest concern citizen's have expressed towards: Telecom Operators (49%), Kosovo Police (33.7%), Health Institutions (27%) and Banks (19%).
