MAPPING THE PRIVATE SECURITY SECTOR LANDSCAPE IN SOUTH EASTERN EUROPE

KCSS researcher Donika Emini attended the fifth workshop in the framework of the project entitled “Mapping the Private Security Sector Landscape in South Eastern Europe” funded by Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), led by Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF). This project brings together researchers from DCAF and four partner organizations in the Western Balkans and Eastern Europe to develop research outputs on private security company (PSC) regulation in Albania, Bulgaria, Kosovo and Serbia. Other organizations included in the project are Belgrade Center for Security Policy (BCSP), Institute for Democracy and Mediation (IDM) and Centre for the Study of Democracy (CSD).

Project partners gathered in Sofia to discuss the project development, common challenges in proceeding with the delivery of the second output, the book that will contain case studies implicating the Private Security Companies in Kosovo.

In addition the team has discussed the outline of the third product in the framework of this project. The group identified the key and most concerning problems that can be further explored in the private security sector in all countries. The third product will be also the last one to be published in the framework of this project.

The upcoming meeting will be held in Belgrade, project partners will bring together experts from all five countries to organize a joint round table and discussion on the privatization of the security sector in the region.
