New York, December 12-13, 2024: The Kosovar Centre for Security Studies (KCSS) is proud to announce its participation in the Second Annual Civil Society-UN Dialogue on Peacebuilding. Dr. Ramadan Ilazi, Head of Research at KCSS, is attending the event, thanks to the support from UN’s Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO), European Peacebuilding Liaison Office (EPLO) and the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).

Building on the foundation of the inaugural dialogue in 2023, this year’s event aims to strengthen the strategic and operational partnership between the UN and civil society. The dialogue seeks to enhance meaningful civil society participation in global peacebuilding efforts, focusing on inclusive decision-making, innovative financing, and integrating local knowledge into UN peacebuilding frameworks

The dialogue emphasizes fostering reciprocal learning between the UN and civil society while exploring new ways to advance peacebuilding. Key discussions include strategies for conflict prevention, financing peacebuilding initiatives, and promoting youth and gender-inclusive approaches. Participants aim to generate actionable recommendations for the 2025 Peacebuilding Architecture Review and other policy processes.

Dr. Ilazi highlighted the importance of moving beyond traditional technocratic approaches in the UN's cooperation with civil society. He stated, "The UN needs to find ways to de-technocratize cooperation with civil society on peacebuilding, explore pathways to bring in the private sector, and build alliances with private actors to strengthen peacebuilding efforts. At the same time, we must focus on identifying and countering efforts that undermine peace."

Dr. Ilazi also underscored the pivotal role civil society plays in the Western Balkans, particularly in disrupting conflict potential and fostering resilience. He noted that the region's civil society has been at the forefront of initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of conflict and promoting reconciliation. KCSS’s work in this area has been instrumental in bridging divides and enhancing interethnic cooperation, making their participation in this global dialogue all the more significant.

Through its participation, KCSS is contributing to shaping global peacebuilding strategies and amplifying the voice of local actors. As the dialogue continues, KCSS remains committed to promoting innovative, inclusive, and impactful solutions to the complex challenges of sustaining peace in Kosovo and the Western Balkans.
