On the 16th of December, Kosovar Centre for Security Studies (KCSS) has held a meeting with relevant stakeholders in the Gjilan municipality. This event was organized in the framework of the project on “Countering violent extremism in Kosovo”, supported by the US Embassy in Kosovo.
This panel was moderated by Donika Emini - researcher at Kosovar Center for Security Studies (KCSS).
Invited panelists in this conference were:
• Mr. Rexhep Kadiru, Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Gjilan;
• Mrs. Elmina Mahmuti, Colonel at the Kosovo Police, Regional Directorate - Gjilan
• Mr. Naim Aliu, Council of Islamic Association in Gjilan
Invited to share their insights and challenges in their efforts to prevent and counter violent extremism in this region were other relevant representatives including here: civil society organizations, youth representatives, and directors of the main high schools in the region, the leaders from the main villages in the Gjilani region, Kosovo Police representatives and the media. All of the above part of the referral mechanism in the Municipality of Gjilan, united and dedicated to prevent and counter violent extremism in this region.
The discussion was focused on the challenges and problems that the community leaders encounter in their communities and offered recommendations on how to prevent violent extremism and radicalization. This event was rated as very important and was highly appreciated by the participants. Moreover they have highlighted the need to organize such meetings aiming to better coordinate and all activities in this municipality. This would not only help the community map the main stakeholders and their roles in preventing violent extremism, but will also ensure better impact and the implementation of activities set by the national strategy.
